The Royal Oak is proud to boast the best rack of lamb in Kent, a superbly succulent preparation utilizing a tastefully subtle hint of rosemary. A recent diner, a man not easily moved to tears, was observed weeping with joy over his plate of tender lamb.
If you prefer a slightly less emotionally stirring entree, the Royal Oak's menu also features local specialty sausages, Marsh lamb pie marinated in red wine and Cointreau, braised steak pie in Bateman's real ale, scampi tails, balti prawn curry, pan-fried trout, fillet and rump steak, and a gloriously delectable grilled whole plaice. All main dishes are served with potatoes and a large selection of fresh local vegetables; the lightly braised pickled cabbage is especially delightful.
For the first course you might want to start with battered calamare; mushrooms in a secret sherry, cream, and mustard sauce; Scottish smoked salmon with an "irresistible" garnish; or perhaps ratatouille, prawn cocktail, or Brussels pate. Salads are also available, including cheese, ham, prawn, and smoked salmon.
For a lighter meal there is a wide selection of Ploughman's lunches -- cheddar, Stilton, ham, sausage, bacon, smoked salmon, tuna, egg, or pate -- ranging from £4.50 to £6.00. A similarly wide variety of sandwiches -- including Stilton, smoked salmon, and hot sausages besides the usual selection -- is available from £2.30-3.25.
All desserts are served with custard, ice cream, or fresh cream.
There is a vegetarian menu available as well. A children's menu is on hand during the daytime. Special requests are always welcome. As it says on the bottom of the menu: "The impossible we can normally do in 48 hours, miracles can sometimes take a little longer, but if it's available we will find it and cook it!"
Four course Christmas menu available 1st to 23rd December, £12.50.
